Tallman Welcomes EMS Reimbursement Legislation
HARRISBURG – According to state Rep. Will Tallman (R-Adams/Cumberland), help is on the way for Pennsylvania’s emergency medical service (EMS) providers following unanimous passage of House Bill 1013 on Wednesday.

“Today, we advanced legislation that will give much-needed support to our EMS providers who can’t survive on chicken barbecues and sub sales alone,” said Tallman. “When Gov. Tom Wolf signs House Bill 1013 into law, he will be righting a wrong that is long overdue for correction.”

Under current law, EMS providers are not reimbursed if they treat a patient in the field, only to see that individual refuse to be transported to a medical facility for additional care. House Bill 1013 would require both private insurers and Medicaid to pay claims even though the patient was not transported or refused to be transported.

“The number of drug overdoses our EMS providers are seeing has grown significantly, and more often than not these incidents turn into what are known as ‘treat, no transport’ cases,” Tallman added. “There is a cost involved when EMS goes out on a call. They should not be required to foot that bill.”
