APPRISE Is Quite A Prize
11/20/2017
The Medicare Open Enrollment period runs until Thursday, Dec. 7. Are you fully aware of what your existing health care insurance policy actually covers? If not, this is a time for senior citizens/Medicare beneficiaries to review their coverage and determine if health and prescription plans continue to meet their needs.

The Adams County Office for Aging and Cumberland County Office of Aging and Community Services are offering free personalized counseling for anyone who has questions or is considering changing plans. In Adams County, counselors are available on Monday and Thursday mornings. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact the Adams County Office for Aging at (717) 334-9296 or 800-548-3240. In Cumberland County, appointments are available this Monday, Nov. 27, and Monday, Dec. 4, by calling (717) 240-6110 or 1-888-697-0371, ext. 6110.

These services are made available through APPRISE, the State Health Insurance Assistance Program. As a member of the House Aging and Older Adult Service Committee, I have come to realize the overwhelming majority of seniors do not take advantage of the many programs available to them. APPRISE, a free and confidential service that is available through the 52 local area agencies on aging, is one of the best kept secrets in Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania’s APPRISE Program recently earned an innovation award from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. APPRISE was chosen because it developed an annual enrollment toolkit that provides community education resources and support materials for volunteer counselors. It also includes information to prepare local AAA programs for the busy enrollment period.

APPRISE provides free one-on-one or telephone assistance with understanding Medicare and Medicaid (Medical Assistance) eligibility and benefits, Medicare supplemental insurance, HMOs, and long-term care insurance. Trained volunteers and staff assist in filing appeals and grievances for denied services and provide information about quality of care in Medicare HMOs.

Volunteer counselors can assist with comparisons and selection of Medicare Supplemental Insurance Plans, Medicare Managed Care Programs, Medicare prescription (Part D) plans, long-term care insurance policies, and other health insurance and public benefit programs. Claim filing and other related paperwork assistance, advocacy, and referral to other federal and state agencies is also available.

Medicare beneficiaries, their families and caregivers can call the APPRISE Program toll-free at 1-800-783-7067 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. My district office can also supply you with a summary booklet on what is available or assist with specific details on something in which you may be interested.

Questions about this or any legislative issue should be directed to my district office at (717) 259-7805 or 1-877-480-9525.
